Cape York is on many people’s ‘Bucket List’ for good reason. Sure, it has the northern most piece of land on the Australian continent, but don’t rush to get there! The Peninsula is a vast and diverse landscape offering heaps of adventures off the beaten path. See the abundant birdlife surrounding lagoons and wetlands; better yet, throw a line in and try your luck catching the famous barramundi Cape York is renowned for.
From East to West, North to South you’ll be experiencing the very best tracks including the Old Coach Road, Frenchmans Track and the most famous Old Telegraph Track. Rivers, Creeks, Sand, Beaches, Rocks, Swamps, Mountains, Rain Forests, the Cape has it all.
Cape York has many pristine beaches that can be easily accessed, and excellent bush camping inside and outside of the National Parks that can be enjoyed throughout the region.
For thousands of years, Aborigines have lived in this region. The path of the CREB Track mostly follows ancient Aboriginal foot trails. After Cook and his crew took refuge in Cooktown in 1770, few white men visited for almost 100 years. Kennedy’s expedition in 1848 bypassed this section of coast, highlighting how difficult the terrain was, and still is.
The 1873 discovery of gold in the Palmer River essentially built Cooktown and plenty more ghost settlements like Maytown, but the area around the CREB Track was primarily mined for tin.
Cape York has almost every landscape that is available in Australia. Between Cairns and the northern most point of the Australian continent, “Cape York”, will surprise and delight any avid 4WD’er.
There is an abundance of opportunities for 4WD enthusiasts to test your off-road driving skills in Cape York. Rocky mountains, crystal clear river crossings, bull dust, flood plains, thick bush, beach driving and rain forest; Cape York has it all.
To tackle the numerous off-road tracks in Cape York successfully you’ll need a well set up 4WD vehicle with low-range gearing and good ground clearance among other things. You can see our vehicle pre trip check list for more details.
Trent, has been fortunate to follow in the footsteps of his old man Ron Moon and they’re grateful to have shared a life time of travel together covering almost every inch of Australia and vast areas of Africa.
Ron & Viv Moon have been writing about their travels for 40 years, published 13 editions of their original Cape York Adventures Guide, edited 4X4 Australia magazine for 15 years and is still editor at large today. For the last 15 years or so Ron & Viv have been freelance travel writing for outdoor, motoring and caravan magazines whilst travelling all over Australia as well as driving around the world.
Trent & Stephanie have been running their own adventure travel business since 2012 specialising in taking people to remote areas in comfort with a high level of service. From outback Australia, remote Papua New Guinea and all over Southern and South East Africa.
We’re bringing Ron & Viv Moon out of retirement to give you a once in a lifetime opportunity to travel Cape York with Australian 4WD legends.
This two week journey has been put together with the experience of 44 Cape York trips and 13 editions of their famous Cape York guide books. Ron was editor for 4×4 Australia Magazine for 15 years and continues as editor at large today, they’ve mapped vast areas of Australia and written guides for Hema Maps while Viv has published multiple outdoor cookbooks and had a regular cooking column in 4X4 Mag for 25 years.
We asked Ron to put together the trip he would do himself if he had two weeks on Cape York so you can rest assured you are going to experience the very best the area has to offer.
Along the way Ron & Viv will be sharing their knowledge and experience, the history, aboriginal art & heritage, fishing holes and access to areas you won’t find in any guide book.

Early explorers, geologists and surveyors, including Kennedy, Hann, Mulligan, Logan Jack, Bradford and Embley, traversed parts of what is now Rinyirru (Lakefield) National Park in the mid to late 1800s.
Hann Crossing is named after the explorer William Hann, who was employed by the Queensland Government to explore Cape York Peninsula in 1872. He had with him a geologist, Norman Taylor, and they found a little gold in the sandy bed of the Palmer River. The find attracted the attention of James Venture Mulligan, an experienced prospector, who followed Hann’s footsteps and struck it rich. The Palmer Gold Rush began in 1873.

Until the Jardine River Ferry was instituted, vehicles had to drive across this fast-flowing 140m wide saltwater crocodile-infested river. These days, a few crazy travellers still wade across the metre-plus deep water and attempt the crossing. However, the Injinoo Aboriginal community have requested that travellers do not cross, as a man was killed by a crocodile in 1993 swimming out to the ferry with a replacement part.
Day 8 – Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
To Bamaga (via ferry) and onto Somerset (camp)
One of the earliest settlements on the Cape, Somerset was established in 1864. John Jardine was placed in charge of the settlement, and after an epic ten month cattle drive from Rockhampton to Somerset, his son Frank Jardine would continue the family connection to this settlement until 1873.
